St. GEORGE CHARITABLE CLINIC

The Ministry of Christ is twofold. Our lord Jesus Christ said to his disciples “Go spread the word of God unto the corners of the world”. He also told them to “Heal the suffering “. Thus our work in Christ has these two aspects. The St George Orthodox Cathedral, Calicut has been one of the strongest churches in the Malabar area and has been conducting the first part of the mission since 1970’s.In 2010 the congregation decided that it is time to move into the second field also and so made a conscious decision in this respect.

Thus they decided to dedicate “ Harvest Festival 2010” to this end and it was decided to use the funds generated during this festival to start a Healing mission – The St George Charity Clinic to serve the poor and suffering . This noble idea was one of the prime reasons for the fantastic success of the Harvest Festival 2010, which generated record collection of over Rs. Ten Lakhs. The spirit of the congregation was very evident in this magnanimous gesture.

On May 16th 2010 the St George Charity Clinic was inaugurated by Honorable Mayor of Kozhikode Sr. M Bhaskaran in a meeting presided over by the Metropolitan of Malabar Diocese HG Zachariah Mar Theophilos. This well-deservedprogram was kicked off with a Medical camp held at the church premises. Here over300 registered patients were examined by over 10 doctors of our Cathedral. In addition to free clinical examination, the patients were also given medicines free of cost. Subsidized lab tests also were conducted as required. A total of Rs Twenty-Sixthousand was spent including the free medicines which was distributed that day. The camp was a resounding success.

Following this the clinic was started at the church premises. The existing building was remodeled and refashioned to be a spacious Clinic with two consultation rooms and a Pharmacy where medicines were stored in a professional manner. A sum of Rs one lakh ninety eight thousand was spent on the infrastructure and interior work of the clinic. Medical equipment worth Rs Twenty Two thousand was bought for the clinic purposes. A computer was donated by a gracious well wisher for the use at the clinic.

The clinic has now been running regularly for past 10+ years. It is at present conducted twice a week on Tuesday and Fridays between 5.00pm and 7.00pm. Around 30 patients are being consulted on each session by the gracious magnanimity of the members of the church. 12 doctors, 2 pharmacists and numerous members of our Church are actively involved in this service. It is entirely done as a free service and none of the doctors are remunerated for the same.

A second medical camp was held at Nadakkavu where around 200 patients were seen and treated. A number of organizations have approached the organizers with request to conduct many more such camps.
As the clinic is now running smoothly with about 30 patients each clinic day , there are a number of proposals in the pipe line including ongoing negotiations with a few Laboratories to have a tie up with the clinic for subsidized lab tests for deserving patients.

Our vision for future development was fulfilled by opening a dialysis centre at Puthupady where we are offering free or subsidized dialysis for the needy patients in our society. Please click the below link to read more about the Dialysis Centre.
